By Vonnegut, gotta love his perspective! It helps with all that’s going on now…
Alzheimer’s is a horrific disease.
I lived with my mother in the lock down dementia unit for a long time and saw it all first hand (I wrote about this in My Mother Who Wore Her Purse As A Shoe).
So drug companies are trying to find helpful meds. But it’s been one disaster after another.
Biogen's announcement on January 31 that it will discontinue commercialization of it’s anti Alzheimer’s anti-amyloid agent, aducanumab (Aduhelm), for Alzheimer's disease (AD) came as no surprise.
"Clearly, the drug was a commercial failure," Dave Knopman, MD, professor of neurology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.
"Despite the accelerated approval, the uncertainty of clinical benefits was transparent, and the public failed to generate any enthusiasm for the drug."
Aducanumab received accelerated approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2021 “despite” recommendations by its own advisory panel not to approve the drug!!!
Their own brain specialists said do not approve this drug.
They were not listened to.
Many of the FDA’s own advisors quit.
The drug came on the market with poor boosting of cognition and lots of potential serious side effects. Including death!
