To supplement with fish oil or not supplement with fish oil, this has become a question.
Yet… fish oil is one of estrogen’s best friends.
Fish oil makes estrogen more bio-available in the body. I wrote about this in Safe Hormones, Smart Women.
A winning duo. Fish oil and estrogen work together to protect DNA against “dings” that might lead to cancer.
The Department of Nutrition and Food Science, Texas A&M University studied this. Their studies in a rodent model demonstrated that fish oil is protective against DNA damage in the colon regardless of gender.
Additionally, when estradiol is added to fish oil, this combination is capable of inducing apoptosis directly at the point of DNA damage.
Fish oil + estrogen protect against cancer! At the cellular level.
But there is a lot of confusion in the “science” about fish oil supplementation.
Some studies say fish oils are not healthy and others say they are amazingly healthy.
What’s the accurate story? As we learned in the past several years, accurate science is easier said than grokked.
I wrote Dr. Mark Houston who is the president of the Hypertensive Institute of Nashville. Dr. Houston and I have lectured together often. Broke gluten free bread together.
And Dr. Mark is my cardiologist. I fly to Nashville to see him.
When I turned 70 I deposited myself at his clinic door step with instructions to “look under my hood”. This was the best visit of my medical history. Dr. Mark has his fingers on the cardiac pulse of what is good and what is not good for our hearts.
Dr. Mark is teaching a three part Functional Cardiology Certification course and I took the first part 24 long hours of lecture all by him, in California. And eagerly await the next modules.
I wrote and asked Dr. Mark why all the “bad news” about fish oil supplements, especially in regards to AFIB.
AFib is the most common type of irregular heartbeat that often causes the heart to beat too quickly. It’s a problem as we age, we can lose some of the controlling mechanisms over keeping our heart rate normal and regular.
One of the biggest concerns with AFib is the risk of stroke.
Those with AFib have about 5 times greater risk of stroke than those who do not have AFib.
Minerals stabilize the heart. In our AFIB patients we do a deep dive into digestion of minerals, as well as nutraceuticals that Teflonize the blood vessels. And much more.
But back to fish oil.
