Delivery Modes of Hormones
The way we get hormones into our bodies is referred to as “delivery modes”.
How hormones are delivered to tissues.
There are PROS and CONS to the diverse choices of how to get hormonal therapies inside us.
Sometimes several delivery modes are used at the same time.
Oral Delivery Modes –
· Whatever is swallowed (oral tablets or mucosal troches -- as much is swallowed even when held against the cheek mucosa with troches --) goes through the digestive track and liver.
This is not optimal for estrogen delivery.
But oral estrogen delivery still does protect breast tissue.
Oral estrogen without adequate “opposing” progesterone, puts the lining of the uterus and the ovaries at excessive estrogenic growth exposure.
Once adequate progesterone is added to oral estrogen, this “balanced” situation protects breast and ovarian tissue.
Oral is excellent delivery mode for progesterone delivery.
Oral progesterone, when it goes through the gut, produces pain and anxiety reducing molecules.
Sometimes oral progesterone is added to a 2nd progesterone delivery mode, i.e. topical or vaginal.
Oral delivery is never recommended for testosterone therapy. Including troches. Promotes excessive inflammation. Possibly more pathologies.
