An important article came out a few days ago in JAMA Network Open.
This article shows that pregnant mom’s that have more fluoride in their bodies during pregnancy, are more prone to birth children with neurobehavior issues (ADHD or Autism). Compared to moms with less fluoride in their bodies.
This study: 129 mom-kids were tracked. Mom’s body content of fluoride. Kid’s neurobehavior at 3 years of age.
Basics first:
We all need iodine. Iodine protects all glandular tissue (thyroid, pancreas, breasts, ovaries, uterus, and prostate).
Iodine protects the architecture of these glands. Keeps them healthy. Less overgrowth of tissue, less abnormal cells, less cysts, less cancer.
Iodine is necessary for every single hormone to work optimally. Iodine must be present on every single hormone binding domain. For hormones to work.
My last book was called SEXY BRAIN becauses sex steroid hormones rule the brain. As well as neurobehavior, that starts in the brain.
If iodine is not present, then we don’t have healthy hormone function. We don’t have healthy brain function.
Much of this is set up in the womb. Thus, mom’s levels of iodine matter. A lot.
Iodine crosses the blood brain barrier and keeps brain tissue healthier. Behavior healthier.
Fluoride and bromide, like iodine, are halides.
Fluoride and bromide rinse iodine out of the body. Making us insufficient to handle our hormones and glands. And keep our brain healthy.
Probably part of the increase of breast cancer in younger and younger women may be due to less and less iodine. Especially in the womb.
The potential adverse effects of iodine being rinsed out of the body can be far-reaching. And devastating.
Fluoride is in our water. In toothpaste. Overlapping with the decline of health of our kids.
Fluoride bumps iodine out of the body.
So does bromide.
What helps protect us from fluoride and bromide? Iodine.
We need iodine replacement. In much larger amounts that you were have thought.
Dr. Brownstein goes into this in-depth in Everything Hormones, which is launching soon - Evergreen - for 16 hours of CMEs for MDs, NPs, PA’s and nurses.
This means you get that many CME hours in the comfort of your own home. At your convenience.
There will be an Early Bird Special the first month, keeping the LOW price at what it was. The second month the price goes up.
You can get a certificate even if you are not one of these licenses, I think. I gotta check that with the CME board now that I think of it. Will do soon, but it is Memorial weekend, ha.
FACT:
One out of 9 American kids has ADHD or Autism.
If you go to a play ground you see how unhealthy so many are. Kids and adults both.
As I have traveled the bowels of the country the last few years with all my lecturing and my 4 year contract to work in Florida for one week a month (while most others my age were isolating at home) I saw how shockingly unhealthy America has become.
Our food is filled with halides that bump iodine out of our body.
Bromide. It’s ubiquitous in store bought food. It is found in flour, sodas and many processed foods. It rinses critical iodine out of the body. Out of the brain.

Key Points
Question Is prenatal fluoride exposure associated with child neurobehavior in a US-based sample?
Findings In this cohort study of 229 pregnant women and their children, a 0.68 mg/L (ie, 1 IQR) increase in specific gravity–adjusted maternal urinary fluoride during pregnancy was associated with nearly double the odds of T scores for total child neurobehavioral problems being in the borderline clinical or clinical range.
Meaning These findings suggest that prenatal fluoride exposure may increase risk of neurobehavioral problems among children living in an optimally fluoridated area in the US.
Abstract
Importance Recent studies in Canadian and Mexican populations suggest an association of higher prenatal fluoride exposure with poorer neurobehavioral development, but whether this association holds for US-based populations is unknown.
Objective To examine associations of third trimester maternal urinary fluoride (MUF) with child neurobehavior at age 3 years in the US.
Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective cohort study utilized urine samples archived from 2017 to 2020 and neurobehavioral data assessed from 2020 to 2023 from the Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors (MADRES) pregnancy cohort, which consisted of predominately Hispanic women residing in Los Angeles, California. Cohort eligibility criteria at recruitment included being 18 years of age or older, less than 30 weeks’ gestation, and a fluent English or Spanish speaker. Exclusion criteria included having a disability preventing participation or provision of informed consent, being HIV positive or incarcerated, and having a multiple gestation pregnancy. There were 263 mother-child pairs who completed the 3-year study visit. In this analysis, women who reported prenatal smoking were excluded. Data analysis was conducted from October 2022 to March 2024.
Exposure Specific gravity-adjusted MUF (MUFSG), a biomarker of prenatal fluoride exposure.
Main Outcomes and Measures Neurobehavior was quantified using the Preschool Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), which included composite scores for Total Problems, Internalizing Problems, and Externalizing Problems. CBCL composite T scores range from 28 to 100. T scores from 60 to 63 are in the borderline clinical range, whereas scores above 63 are in the clinical range. Linear and logistic regression models adjusted for covariates were conducted.
Results A total of 229 mother-child pairs (mean [SD] maternal age, 29.45 [5.67] years; 116 female children [50.7%] and 113 male children [49.3%]) who had MUFSG measured were included in the study. Median (IQR) MUFSG was 0.76 (0.51-1.19) mg/L, and 32 participants (14.0%) had a Total Problems T score in the borderline clinical or clinical range. A 1-IQR (0.68 mg/L) increase in MUFSG was associated with nearly double the odds of the Total Problems T score being in the borderline clinical or clinical range (odds ratio, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.17-2.86; P = .008), as well as with a 2.29-point increase in T score for the Internalizing Problems composite (B = 2.29; 95% CI, 0.47-4.11; P = .01) and a 2.14-point increase in T score for the Total Problems composite (B = 2.14; 95% CI, 0.29-3.98; P = .02).
Conclusions and Relevance In this prospective cohort study of mother-child pairs in Los Angeles, California, prenatal fluoride exposure was associated with increased neurobehavioral problems. These findings suggest that there may be a need to establish recommendations for limiting fluoride exposure during the prenatal period.
Within minutes Medscape wrote an article about this.
Medscape wrote: This research adds to a growing body of observational studies conducted in North America showing a link between exposure to fluoride and childhood IQ, neurotoxicity, and brain development.
Did you know this?
Did you doctor talk to you about this?
Based on the evidence thus far, "we suggest that it is warranted for pregnant individuals to drink filtered tap water," said Tracy Bastain, PhD, an associate professor of clinical population and public health sciences at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles and a co-author of the research.
Studies have shown that fluoride can cross the placenta and blood-brain barrier, Bastian said.
Some research has found that fluoride disrupts thyroid hormones, which are critical for brain development.
They did mention: Rice — which absorbs fluoride present in tap water — was a food staple among many of the families. Green and black teas also contain high amounts of fluoride because the leaves absorb the chemical as they grow.
In response the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) said that it still supported pregnant women consuming fluoridated water due to its dental benefits. WTF?
The group "does not have a position on fluoride in pregnancy, including fluoridated water. Our clinical experts will certainly review and consider this study, but we do not have a position at the time," wrote Kate Connors, ACOG director of communications and public affairs, in an email.
Dangerous dullards.
Within minutes almost, editorials were written that none of this is valid. The urine testing was spot even though they tried to adjust for this.
The biggest criticism that the editorials and news stations all picked up on was that we just have better trained docs to identify ADHD and Autism. We don’t have more ADHD and Autism. We just diagnose better.
BS.
Our kids were not always this way.
Medicine is not admitting how our world, air, water and food, has created sick children.
What to do? And this does not just apply to pregnant moms, but to ALL of us.
We need to avoid fluoride and bromide as much as possible.
And supplement with more iodine.
Take the course if you want to know the details of what kind, how much, why, etc.
BTW in 2018 Medscape published this research:
Prenatal exposure to higher levels of fluoride not only impairs cognitive development but also significantly increases the incidence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, new research shows.
"Our current study suggests that fluoride not only interferes with overall IQ or overall cognitive development but may also contribute to symptoms of ADHD," lead investigator Morteza Bashash, PhD, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, Canada, told Medscape Medical News.
This came out in October 2018. How many pregnant women and babies have missed out as no medical association like ACOG has taken action based on this?
They keep saying continue to use fluoridated water.
There is not more ADHD. Our docs are just better at diagnosis.
This is not FACT.
This isn't the first study linking fluoride to childhood ADHD or cognitive impairment.
In 2018 Medscape shared:
In addition to water fluoridation, fluoride is also added to dental products, and a range of foods contain it in varying quantities. One consequence of excess fluoride consumption is dental fluorosis, discoloration or pitting of teeth.
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that from 1999 to 2004, about 33% of 6- to 11-year-olds had experienced some form of dental fluorosis.
The CDC has suggested measures to protect children. It has recommended that families with children younger than 8 years consider using alternate sources of drinking water or, if they live in an area where fluoride levels are higher than 2 ppm, filtering their water.
Has your OBGYN recommended filtered water to your pregnant patients?
For the past 50 years, the medical establishment has claimed that fluoride is safe and effective; should the official position on fluoridation change?
God give me strength.
Iodine used to be added to flour to make it a better texture and keep shelf life longer. Now bromide is added. Overlapping with our increasing epidemics of ADHD and Autism.
Where do we get bromide which is a true issue for our kid’s brains?
Baked goods
Potassium bromate is a white crystalline powder that's used as a food additive in baked goods like bread, rolls, pastries, bagels, and crusts to improve their texture and rise. It's also known as E924.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified potassium bromate as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" and it's banned in many countries, including Brazil, Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
In the U.S., the FDA still allows its use, but some companies have switched to other ingredients. You can check the label for store-bought breads, buns, and flours to see if they contain bromated flour.
Read labels.
Citrus-flavored soft drinks
Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is used in many citrus-flavored soft drinks, including Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Powerade, Orange Fanta, Orange Crush, Sun Drop, Squirt, and Fresca, to prevent flavorings from separating.
The FDA has removed BVO from its list of "generally recognized as safe" chemicals, but it's still allowed in small quantities. Some studies have linked BVO to neurological problems, thyroid, heart, and liver problems, and behavioral, developmental, and reproductive issues.
Read labels.
Fluoride’s time-line:
The first community to add fluoride to its water supply was Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945, raising the fluoride content to 1.0 parts per million (ppm). The decision was based on research by one single dentist Frederick McKay (1874–1959) that established that fluorosis can occur before teeth erupt.
Subsequent studies showed that adding fluoride to water significantly reduced cavities in schoolchildren, and by 1960. So in 1960 we really started to exposure about 50 million people in the United States to water fluoridation.
Today, water fluoridation affects 200 million Americans.
Hmmm. Protect cavities over brain function? What do you think?
Bottom line:
We all should avoid fluoride and bromide as much as possible.
Especially women wanting to get pregnant, pregnant and lactating.
But all of us.
We need more iodine supplementation. It does not harm thyroid tissue. Iodine replacement, even in “larger dosages” is not contraindicated in Hashimoto’s disease (autoimmune thyroiditis).
Check out “Let’s Talk Iodine”!
This is a falsehood promoted by some. But it does not play out clinically.
Dr. Brownstein calls the docs that fear iodine, “Iodophobics”.
Dr. Brownstein clearly projects from the research and agile thinking based on it, that if pregnant mom’s were started on iodine before pregnancy and all through pregnancy, many kids would NOT be suffering life long from ADHD and/or Autism.
I take 12.5 mg of iodine one day and 25 the next. If I had two kidneys I would take more as I have had breast cancer. Breast cancer is a clear shouting out loud that this body was deficient in iodine. As iodine protects breast tissue’s architecture against fibrocystic lumpy bumpy all the way to dysplasia and then tumors. This research started years ago with Eskin.
Many researchers like Eskin have recommended iodine be adjunctive care for all breast cancer patients. Why? Iodine kills breast cancer cells and helps protect the architecture of breast tissue, even in women who suffer with cancer.
But today’s medicine would never add in iodine. It cannot be patented and made into an expensive medication.
Medicine is about meds and procedures. Not about minerals.
Another example: got a migraine? Use meds. They never first start with adding in magnesium which has many peer review articles on it erradicating migraines in some patients. Not all.
But medicine is NOT about inexpensive nutritional supplements.
Many of Dr. Brownstein’s cancer patients, and mine that I do educational consults with working along with their primary doctors and even oncologists, are on 25 to 100 mg of iodine a day. Some more.
We get our iodine from either Biotics or Dr. Brownstein’s supplement department. That number is 866 877 6467. These are trustworthy sources. I like David’s as these caplets are small and scored so easy to swallow or alter dosage.
We want medical associations that truly want to keep us and our kids well. That don’t take huge funds from Big Pharma so they are tainted and we cannot trust what they say to our docs. That trickles on down to us. And our kids. And their brains and behavior.
We want politicians that admit that American as a nation is not well. With kid’s leading this epidemic of unwellness, especially in neurobehaviorial issues.
Do we really want to wait for more studies while our kids get sicker and sicker when taking action is not really hard to do?
It means filter your water.
Avoid toothpaste with fluoride.
Make smarter food decisions.
Avoid unhealthy sodas.
Use organic flours without added bromide. Buy products without added bromide.
Why can’t we admit that our children are ill? And take action?
For shame.
Knowledge is power.
Add iodine to your replacement schedule. If you want to know more details consider taking Everything Hormones. Evergreen coming soon.

important info thank you for all you do!
yep no way🤮don’t trust (unfiltered) tap. ideally reverse osmosis
So sad to read how many things about our health & medicine are so wrong. Stunning is that it’s done intentionally. Thank you dr Berkson , your work & articles is so much to think about…….million thanks 🙏🏻
